Why I can't wear the upper & lower night guards simultaneously?

For optimum comfort and effectiveness, we recommend wearing a single-side (upper or lower) night guard while you sleep. Our night guards are meticulously designed for single-side wearing, ensuring maximum benefits. Wearing both upper and lower night guards simultaneously is generally not recommended for several reasons:

Discomfort: Having both an upper and lower guard can feel bulky and uncomfortable in the mouth, making it difficult to sleep.

Breathing Issues: The combined bulk of both guards can obstruct the airway or make it harder to breathe, especially for those who breathe through their mouth.

Jaw Positioning: Wearing both guards might affect the natural positioning of your jaw. This can lead to discomfort or even exacerbate jaw issues such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

Effectiveness: Typically, a single guard is sufficient to protect teeth from grinding or clenching. Wearing both might not provide additional benefits and could be counterproductive.

When can I get my night guards or retainers after I sent the impression back?

It usually takes 2-5 business days (depending on your location, the west coast will be faster) for the package to arrive at our lab. If you drop it in the blue USPS drop-off box, it will take longer. Once we receive your impression, we will produce and ship out your night guards or retainers within 24 hours. After that, it takes another 2-5 business days for them to arrive at your place.

What's the difference between night guards and retainers?

Custom Night Guards and Retainers are two completely different products.

A Custom Night Guard is designed to prevent teeth grinding at night, protecting the teeth from wear and addressing TMJ issues. On the other hand, a Retainer is a post-orthodontic treatment device worn throughout life to prevent teeth from shifting.

Due to the distinct purposes of these products, the manufacturing process and materials used are entirely different. Night guards are typically polished for comfort, ensuring they do not come into contact with the gums.

On the other hand, the retainer is intended to maintain the position of your teeth. It's crafted from a hard material that applies pressure to keep your teeth in the correct alignment, which may feel tighter compared to the guard.

What if I need night guards to protect my teeth from grinding but also need retainers to keep my teeth in place?

If you require both functions of teeth protection from grinding and teeth retention, we offer a specialized product known as the 1.5mm retainer. This retainer is slightly thicker than standard retainers, designed specifically to withstand teeth grinding without being bitten through quickly. You can find more details about this product on our retainer page.

The key difference with this product compared to a traditional retainer is that it can also function as a night guard, allowing you to wear it simultaneously for both purposes. This dual functionality provides comprehensive care for both teeth grinding protection and teeth retention needs.

Should I get an upper or lower guard?

  1. Start with Both: For individuals new to night guards, it's advisable to initially try both upper and lower guards to determine which one is more comfortable and effective.
  2. Preference for Upper Guards: Many people find upper guards to be less obtrusive and prefer them. A single night guard, either upper or lower, is generally sufficient for teeth grinding unless advised otherwise by a dentist.
  3. Considerations for Choosing Upper or Lower:
  • Gag Reflex: If you have a severe gag reflex, a lower guard might be more comfortable and less likely to induce gagging.
  • Braces or Retainers: Choose the arch without braces or a permanently cemented retainer, as the impression putty can't be applied to teeth with braces, and a night guard could interfere with a retainer.
  • Dental Health Issues: If you have loose teeth, sores, or dental problems on a particular arch, it's recommended to use the night guard on the opposite arch to avoid exacerbating these issues.

How to make the perfect impression?

  1. Prepare Your Teeth: Begin by thoroughly brushing and flossing your teeth. There's no need to use latex gloves for this process.
  2. Select the Right Tray: Choose a tray from the kit that comfortably accommodates all your teeth without touching the edges.
  3. Mix the Putty (Base and Catalyst): Quickly, within 45 seconds, mix and knead one "base" putty (green) and one "catalyst" putty (white) together until the color is uniformly blended.
  4. Shape the Putty: Within 15 seconds, roll the putty into a hotdog shape and place it onto your selected impression tray.
  5. Apply the Tray: Carefully center your teeth on the tray and firmly push it onto your teeth with even pressure. Hold it in place for 3 minutes or until the putty has completely hardened.
  6. Remove the Impression: Gently and slowly remove the impression tray from your teeth. Rinse the impression with room-temperature water, and pat it dry.

Additionally, you can use the picture on the left as a visual reference to help you follow these instructions accurately.

How do I pick the right size impression tray for myself?

Selecting the correct impression tray is a crucial step in the process of taking your own dental impression. Each kit provides you with two large, two medium, and two small trays for your convenience. To determine the most suitable tray for your needs, follow these guidelines:

  1. Ensure Full Coverage: Place both trays in your mouth before mixing the putty. Verify that the selected tray is long enough to cover all your molars. Adequate coverage of your molars is essential, as an incomplete impression may limit the effectiveness of your night guard. The guard can only extend as far back as the impression allows.
  2. Maintain Adequate Space: While testing the fit, make sure your teeth do not come into contact with the side walls of the impression tray. There should be a noticeable gap between your teeth and the tray's sides on both sides. If you find that your teeth touch any of the tray's side walls, it's advisable to opt for a larger tray size.

By adhering to these guidelines and selecting the appropriately sized tray, you will ensure a precise and comprehensive impression, leading to the creation of a well-fitted custom night guard that effectively safeguards your teeth during nighttime grinding.
